The following is a letter of reference from Jeanne, whose grand-daughter studies at Colorado's Alpine Piano Lessons, located in Lakewood, CO:
I am writing to tell you about Bonnie Kotzer and her abilities as a piano teacher. Not only is she a very talented pianist, creative and knowlegeable, but she is also an excellent influence on her students. She teaches my 9-year old granddaughter and I am usually present during her lessons.
Bonnie as engaged this young student from the very beginning piano skills to playing comfortably with both hands, including a solid knowledge and use of chords. My grand-daughter is a very enthousiastic student and often wants instant success. Bonnie is gentle and firm with her so as not to break her spirit, but also realizes a student's need to play an active role in her music education.
When this students feels overwhelmed, Bonnie encourages her while she goes over the piece several times until it is manageable and anxiety has decreased. Then she emphasizes that if frustration gets high at home she is to put it aside until the next lesson. This seems to chalenge my grand-daughter to stretch her abilities and be more successful, and she is also free to let it go if it's not working for her.
My grand-daughter wanted to play a particular piece the was beyond her abilities, but she had heard it on a movie soundtrack and was excited to try it. Bonnie encouraged her to do so, modifying it a bit. She even suggested she play it for a recital. This student blossomed with that piece because Bonnie had given her the confidence to master it and helped her develop the skills to do just that. She did not tell her it was impossible.
Bonnie is a very conscientious about the fine line between a challenge and high frustration. She wants to encourage not deflate the spirit. Bonnie is also very patient, sensitive, flexible, and conscious of how to create a positive environment geared for success. She is a wonderful inspiration for my grand-daughter.
Sincerely,
Jeannie
